What Labour’s Election win means for employers
Labour’s landslide victory in the General Election has given them a mandate to implement the huge employment law changes that they promised in their manifesto.
• Following Labour’s promise to introduce legislation within 100 days of entering government, employers need to prepare for significant changes to employment law.
• There are over 60 changes that Labour have pledged to make overall, which will impact on different areas of the employment relationship including disciplinary and capability procedures, flexible working, contracts, pay, equality/harassment protections and rights to time off.
• The new government’s employment law promises include:
– Giving employees the right to claim unfair dismissal from day one of their employment, instead of needing two years’ service
– Removing the National Minimum Wage age bandings
– Making Statutory Sick Pay available to all workers, and
– Introducing a new duty on employers to inform all new employees of their right to join a union, which will need to be part of the written contract.
