The Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) for the manufacturing sector published at the start of this week mostly showed an improvement compared to the April readings.  Both the global PMI and the one for the UK were at their highest since July 2022 and even those countries where the index suggests that activity in the sector is contracting mostly pointed to this being at a slower pace than for some time.  Out of 30 countries/regions that we track, 17 were above the 50 threshold – this is the first occasion in a long while when more than half of the readings have been in this position.

Despite a gap last week, the only other Economic News this week is the European Commission’s Economic Sentiment Index (ESI);  like the PMIs noted above, this is also showing tentative signs of an improving situation, although mostly among the smaller EU nations with only Italy and Spain among the larger countries having positive ESI readings.

For operational reasons, we were a little late launching the MTA Business Survey but this is now underway;  if you did not get the launch email, you can the secure online from at www.mta.org.uk/mta-business-survey-may24 – we hope you can spare a couple of minutes to let us have your feedback.

That concludes the Friday Brief for this week! We hope you have an amazing weekend and a great week ahead!
