The Purchasing Managers Index for the manufacturing sector published this week showed a mixed picture with the UK among the countries where the reading picked up – in fact, the UK has the largest improvement globally in March and was above the crucial 50 level for the first time since July 2022. But (isn’t there always a “but”), there is still some distortion to the UK figures from extended suppliers’ delivery times due to shipping delays – interestingly, the Euro-zone reports the opposite trend and it seems only to be the UK which is still reporting this effect.
Our other “economic” story is the latest edition of the CECIMO Economic & Statistical Toolbox with the Q4-23 edition now available. This brings together various data sources on and around the machine tools business, mainly at a European level. We report some of the key highlights of the latest edition in the article below and provide access to both the full report and the Economic Dashboard which members can also access.
With a new month and a new quarter starting this week, we have a couple of surveys operating. For MTA members there is our monthly Business Survey which you can access at www.mta.org.uk/mta-business-survey-mar24 and we have also launched the EIA Quarterly Survey for companies in that part of the MTA family – this is at https://www.mta.org.uk/eia-quarterly-survey-1st-quarter-2024.
That concludes our newsletter for another week! We hope you all have great weekends and we’ll be back again for some more great stories next Friday!
