Our economic news is again split into two sections to make it easier to absorb. For the UK we have the somewhat disappointing results from the latest CBI Industrial Trends Survey, mixed results from the latest productivity figures (some key manufacturing industries have outperformed the economy, especially in the comparisons with the pre-pandemic period) and a brief summary of the ONS Annual Business Survey which has a usefully detailed breakdown at an industry level, even if the “latest” data is rather old.
The other main economic news this week – in our International article – is in the flash PMI figures which came out on Tuesday; these paint a gloomy picture of the manufacturing sector, in the UK, Euro-zone and the USA, with only Japan seeing an improved (and positive) reading. We also have some notes on the latest economic forecasts from the European Commission which are probably of more use to someone interested in a particular country rather than at an overall level.
That concludes our newsletter for the week! We hope you have a wonderful bank holiday weekend and we’ll ‘see’ you again next Friday!
