Scope of the proposed deliverable
This document specifies visibility and safety considerations regarding the installation of dynamic signs, including the display contents and signage location.
This document provides requirements and recommendations concerning dynamic signs from three perspectives: 1) ensuring the visibility of dynamic signs, 2) image safety concerns related to videos displayed in dynamic signs (e.g., photosensitive seizures (PSS), visually induced motion sickness (VIMS)), 3) reducing the impact on pedestrian traffic flow caused by the location of dynamic signs.
This document applies to pedestrians, not persons in vehicles. Furthermore, it does not cover signs for guidance to evacuation sites.
Purpose
This standard is a part of the umbrella structure of the Dynamic Sign series developed in ISO/TC159/SC5.
A dynamic sign is an information presentation technology that changes its position, size, brightness, and content. Furthermore, this change has the advantage of increasing attractiveness, identification, readability, and comprehensibility. Therefore, it is necessary to specify the design requirements to maintain these visibility aspects. On the other hand, the dynamic component of the image may cause undesirable biological effects, such as PSS due to flashing frequency, repetitive patterns, etc., VIMS due to visual motion stimuli involving rotation or translation to a wider field of view. In addition, depending on the location of the sign, it may cause stagnation of human flow, reverse flow, interference, or confusion, which is not the intention of the installer.
ISO 23456-1 Part 1: Genral published previously described items to be considered for dynamic signs but not specified requirements and recommendations in detail. Hence this standard describes the requirements and recommendations to maintain the visibility of dynamic signs and to eliminate the negative effects of dynamic signs described above. Since there is no existing standard that can be immediately referred to for installation location, information that can be used as a reference is described based on a literature survey from the viewpoint of ergonomics.
By clarifying the requirements and recommendations for ergonomic considerations, this standard can contribute to the successful development of new technologies.
Since this standard summarizes visibility and safety considerations for information presented in dynamic signs and used in a physical environment, it is appropriate to develop it as a new proposal in ISO/TC 159/SC 5/WG 7, which has been working on standardization related to these issues
